Do air purifiers remove odors and dust? Which air purifier is best?

LEVOIT Air Purifier for Home is a game-changer for me in terms of how the air feels in my home during allergy season. It also makes a world of difference in removing odors in my rental. We'll discuss more on odors in a bit.

How long does it need to run to clean the air?

I noticed a difference in 20 minutes. In under a half an hour the air in my living room felt fresh and clean. The product description claims to be able to clean over 1000 square feet of living space per hour. I didn’t find that this air purifier needed that a long time to run to work at all. I have run this air purifier for an entire day and also tested it out by running it all night. I'll restate that the air felt fresher at only 20 minutes. When running the unit for at home use for an entire day or night, the air definitely felt clean and fresh. However, since my home is pretty fresh anyways, I don't know that I saw a difference from running it a short time versus 8 hours or more. Rentals on the other hand are a different story which I'll discuss later. Heavy odors in a home or room do benefit from running the Levoit Air Purifier for a longer period of time.

How does it tackle odors?

I can answer this question for my own home which has cooking aromas as well as my experience in rentals where a guest has brought a pet or smoked. For my home, it quickly removes day to day smells leaving our home feeling fresh, clean and neutral smelling. My home in general smells lovely, I mean who doesn’t love the smell of fresh soup or bread? But I do notice it feeling fresh after the Levoit air purifier running for just 20 Minutes.

Does this air purifier tackle smoke and pet odors?

Getting rid of smoke and pet odors is hard. Especially if they are long standing odors, meaning they have been there for months or even years. In my rental, I had a challenging experience trying to remove smoke odors from one unit and pet odors from another. I tried several common smoke and odor removers such as Febreeze air freshener and activated charcoal packs. The air fresheners did nothing but mask the odor for a few minutes and the activated charcoal did not make any difference. I ONLY had results of the smoke and pet odors being removed after I used the LEVOIT Air Purifier which traps and neutralizes different types of odors, such as pet smells, cooking odors, smoke, and even harmful chemicals in the air.

Now let’s talk about how long it took for the odors to go!

First, I bought a special filter called the Levoit smoke remover filter and I made sure to only by the brand name filter. Amazon does have cheaper versions, but don’t bother. I recommend the LEVOIT brand filter because it fits correctly in the air purifier and works.

The special filter for SMOKE was so effective, I was relieved! To set expectations, it did take a few days. We first opened all the windows and ran the fan. Then we ran the LEVOIT with the special filter for 3 days. After day 1, I could still smell the odors. After day 2 it was better and after day 3 I started feeling more comfortable. Hooray! So glad we were able to get the years worth of smoke smell removed with the combo of the smoke filter and the LEVOIT Air Purifier.  It paid for itself for this one purpose alone!  So if you have smoke odors, which are very difficult to remove, I recommend that you give this a try.  Also be prepared to run the device over several days for odors that are old.

Is the LEVOIT air purifier quiet or noisy?

This is a personal opinion. The product description says It operates quietly, allowing you to sleep peacefully or work undisturbed. It does have a soft fan whirring noise that is almost like background white noise. I find it too loud to work around, but I could sleep with it on at night.

Do I recommend LEVOIT air purifier?

YES! I would purchase again and I probably will. It works well in living rooms, kitchen as well as bathrooms. Naturally, the smaller the space the faster the air purifier will work.

There are other competitor brands out there but at the time of writing this blog this air purifier has over 100K reviews, mostly 5 stars. That’s a hundred thousand reviews. WOW! And I think it deserves it.

It currently is under $100 which is a great deal.  I would have paid a lot for for the functionality.  

The last thing to note is the size of the unit.  Take a look at the specifications so you can get a sense of how large this device is.  It is about the size of a blender or a lamp, so be prepared to have some space to place it or store it.
